Game on - 2008/9 Season

The 2008/9 season starts 8:30am Sunday Nov. 3rd.  at the SMU rink.  Don't forget about adjusting 1Hr for daylight savings from the night before.

Goalies this Sunday features a matchup between Emptynet (coming out of retirement because it's the cool thing for superstars to do nowadays) versus Trevor Wobig (hey what's your goalie nick-name?)

League fees are $195, payable to OTHL. Drifters can pay $15 per session.

Sunday's are a GO!

All players,

Hey we are booked at the SMU hockey rink on Sunday’s beginning November 2nd running consecutively through March 29th.  Booked ice time is 9-10am but we will try to get on the ice by 8:30am just like past seasons (and possibly skate past 10am if nobody kicks us off the ice).  With the one hour time slot it’s more important than ever that everyone gets there early and is ready to skate.  SMU has requested that each player sign a release waiver.

I am still working on possible ice times for Thursday evenings at SMU.  Hopefully we can get the majority of the Thursday’s and keep the schedule real clean.  If we are unable to secure many Thursdays I can continue to work with Bud King on possible Tuesday evening skates if enough players are interested.

Please bring your $195 checks when you show up to play or mail to:
Craig Dennis, 215 Benson Drive, Lewiston MN 55952.
Make checks payable to:
Old Timers Hockey League or OTHL.

Any skater who shows up that does not want to skate the whole year at $195 has the option of paying $15 per skate.

I will be traveling to Asia from November 8th-21st.  Can I get 1-2 volunteers to collect possible $15 per skate fees for Sunday Nov 9th and 16th while I am out of the country?   Just send me an email response if interested.

I’d like to ensure as best as possible that we always have 2 goalies.  If you are interested in being a full-time goalie please let me know. (Even goalies pay the $195 or $15 skate –sucks, but we’re broke).  If you are interested in being a part-time goalie I’d also like to know.  Send me an email response.

As a league we are still interested in recruiting at least 4 more full season members.

Sunday skates at SMU from sometime starting in Oct to the end of Feb is about $3,900 for 1.5 hrs of ice time.  Breakeven is 20 players committing to pay $195.  The pay per skate policy is being deemphasized due to the problems it caused.  We will offer it but only for guest type skaters who randomly play.  No one individual wants to shell out close to $4,000 out of their own pocket and hope you can collect it over the next 5 months in such a piecemeal fashion.  We have no reserve funds from last year to work off of for the start of this year.  We are returning to a league type pay structure for the entire Sunday season.  For the random skater the pay per skate fee will be offered to them at $15 per session.  If we raise more cash with full time players or through the $15 fees we can continue to have dialog about booking weekday ice or securing reserves for booking next years ice.

I’ve been discussing with Denny the option of only booking an hour at SMU on Sunday’s but still trying to stay on the ice for the normal 1.5hr.  This could potentially stretch our checkbook out for an additional 10 skates.  If no other group books ice immediately after our time slot the thinking is that we would not get booted off the ice and could skate the extra 30 minutes. The risk would be that another group does come in (permanently or randomly) and books ice after our time slot for which we would then get booted off after 1hr.  We could also hedge the risk by starting a little earlier on Sunday as another option to consider.  If you have any opinion on us taking this 1hr risk approach let me know.  We are strongly considering going this route.

Regarding ice time as SMU on Sunday’s they are still getting their information together and are planning on sending me all the forms shortly.  I’ve asked SMU to indicate if there are ice times available through the year on either Tue/Wed/Thur after 9pm. for us to consider as additional options for play.

The situation at Bud King is that a 5-6 team league has already reserved Thursday nights for the entire year.  Jim Martin is still trying to assemble the ice schedule to let me know what times and days are available.  He plans on giving me a schedule for available ice time in the next 1-2 weeks. He did indicate the Tuesday’s after H.S. hockey games are generally open, Wed nights are booked to 10pm with Winona Hockey and Thursdays are booked by a new league.  Early indications is that random Tuesday evening skates are an option for old timers to consider (minus what SMU comes back with).

Going forward I’d like to have 2 volunteers to represent team red and team green as team captains for each.  Basically to help ensure that the players on each bench are paid up and helping with enforcing the pay policy. I certainly will not be able to attend each game and we need a couple more people who can be assigned as pay points.

There has been some discussion with other players on doing some fundraising. Ideas so far include a fish fry with the Eagles, finding some corporate donors and even finding a bar willing to sell pull tabs (let me know if you know of a bar as a candidate).

Also, in the spirit of putting “old” back in old timers I’ve been in contact with different over 50 old timer leagues in Rochester as part of an attempt of recruiting 5-10 more roster spots for Winona old timers.  We were also invited to “swap” some ice times with these other teams and play a few head to head games this winter where we would go to Rochester for a Thur. night game and they would come to Winona for a Sun. morning game.
