Sunday skates at SMU from sometime starting in Oct to the end of Feb is about $3,900 for 1.5 hrs of ice time. Breakeven is 20 players committing to pay $195. The pay per skate policy is being deemphasized due to the problems it caused. We will offer it but only for guest type skaters who randomly play. No one individual wants to shell out close to $4,000 out of their own pocket and hope you can collect it over the next 5 months in such a piecemeal fashion. We have no reserve funds from last year to work off of for the start of this year. We are returning to a league type pay structure for the entire Sunday season. For the random skater the pay per skate fee will be offered to them at $15 per session. If we raise more cash with full time players or through the $15 fees we can continue to have dialog about booking weekday ice or securing reserves for booking next years ice.
I’ve been discussing with Denny the option of only booking an hour at SMU on Sunday’s but still trying to stay on the ice for the normal 1.5hr. This could potentially stretch our checkbook out for an additional 10 skates. If no other group books ice immediately after our time slot the thinking is that we would not get booted off the ice and could skate the extra 30 minutes. The risk would be that another group does come in (permanently or randomly) and books ice after our time slot for which we would then get booted off after 1hr. We could also hedge the risk by starting a little earlier on Sunday as another option to consider. If you have any opinion on us taking this 1hr risk approach let me know. We are strongly considering going this route.
Regarding ice time as SMU on Sunday’s they are still getting their information together and are planning on sending me all the forms shortly. I’ve asked SMU to indicate if there are ice times available through the year on either Tue/Wed/Thur after 9pm. for us to consider as additional options for play.
The situation at Bud King is that a 5-6 team league has already reserved Thursday nights for the entire year. Jim Martin is still trying to assemble the ice schedule to let me know what times and days are available. He plans on giving me a schedule for available ice time in the next 1-2 weeks. He did indicate the Tuesday’s after H.S. hockey games are generally open, Wed nights are booked to 10pm with Winona Hockey and Thursdays are booked by a new league. Early indications is that random Tuesday evening skates are an option for old timers to consider (minus what SMU comes back with).
Going forward I’d like to have 2 volunteers to represent team red and team green as team captains for each. Basically to help ensure that the players on each bench are paid up and helping with enforcing the pay policy. I certainly will not be able to attend each game and we need a couple more people who can be assigned as pay points.
There has been some discussion with other players on doing some fundraising. Ideas so far include a fish fry with the Eagles, finding some corporate donors and even finding a bar willing to sell pull tabs (let me know if you know of a bar as a candidate).
Also, in the spirit of putting “old” back in old timers I’ve been in contact with different over 50 old timer leagues in Rochester as part of an attempt of recruiting 5-10 more roster spots for Winona old timers. We were also invited to “swap” some ice times with these other teams and play a few head to head games this winter where we would go to Rochester for a Thur. night game and they would come to Winona for a Sun. morning game.
